Waiting for test results can be a bit un-nerving, especially when the test results might indicate a change in your lifestyle. Knowing what to do while you are waiting for test results can help you keep a positive frame of mind while making sure that you don’t miss any important information related to your tests.
Establish How and When the Results will be Delivered
How will you know when your test results are in and how will the results be delivered to you? Establish the answers to these questions with the lab or your doctor’s office. Will someone call you? Do you need to come back for an office visit to get your results? Should you initiate a call, and if so, on what day or time? Does your health care system offer an online medical record system so you can check on the results that way?
Also ask when results should be expected. This way, you know not to worry about checking in early.
Develop Good Communication with Your Doctor
If you are anxious about your test results, let your doctor know. He or she may be able to reassure you and if you are anxious will be on alert to notify you as soon as the results come back. When you establish a good relationship with your doctor, and his or her nurse, you will be more likely to get all of your questions asked.
Distract Yourself
Try to do something fun and relaxing while you wait for your results. Play an online game, go to lunch with a friend, read that best seller book, go out for a run or whatever activity will make you happy and entertained. If you are focused on something fun, you will be less likely to be focused on the pending test results.
Baking cookies with kids, is one of my favorite distractions, because it is hard not to laugh when a small child has icing on his nose.
Focus on the Positive
Try to focus on the positive. Instead of assuming the worst, think about how great it is that we live in a time where diagnosis and cures are common or about all of the people who are around to provide excellent care.
