If your children asked for, but didn’t receive the puppy or kitten they placed on their wish list to Santa, this book might work as a consolation present.
Maybe.
Sure, Charlie and the Christmas Kitty may be a far cry from an adorable tail-wagging, face-licking bundle of fluff that would follow your child around the house and potentially run for help should he fall down a well, but, hey, Santa’s not perfect.
Still, you can’t deny the cuteness contained in this festive holiday read, even though the story’s clueless main character doesn’t realize it’s Christmas:
“Why is there a great big tree in the house?!?
And why are all these boxes underneath it?
Hey—what is that?!? Where did it come from?
Uh-oh. This isn’t good. . . . This isn’t good at all!”
Charlie and the Christmas Kitty is Pioneer Woman/Food Network star/New York Times best-selling author, Ree Drummond’s follow-up to Charlie the Ranch Dog. In this installment, the laid-back basset hound gets a Christmas gift he didn’t expect… or want.
A rabbit.
Or not.
Upon further inspection, Charlie realizes that the rambunctious, ribbon-wearing furball is actually a kitten, not a bunny.
Regardless, the nearly comatose canine doesn’t want anything to do with it.
All Charlie wanted for Christmas was some bacon and a nap. Instead, he got a playful cat who’s looking for a new BFF.
Young readers will delight in seeing how the frisky kitty wins over the disinterested dog. In addition, your little bookworms will receive lessons about friendship and acceptance.
Charlie’s situation is the perfect reminder that you never know what can happen if you keep an open mind… and an open eye.
P.S. My 8-year-old’s favorite part of the entire book is finding the tiny chipmunk peeking out on each page.
Precious.
