Giving Up Before You Have Started

FitnessDon’t give up before you have even gotten started!  Those are my words of advice and hope for anyone who has come off the past week of the holidays feeling defeated.

You might have done a lot of indulging.  In fact, it could be that you ate enough the past several days that you’re wondering if there is really any hope to becoming a fitter person.

In thinking about the New Year, you might be questioning how it can make any real difference.  What’s so magical about the start of a New Year anyway?  How can that change the outer me?

I think the reason so many people give up or mistakenly believe that nothing will ever change is because the focus is on the wrong thing.  We become wrapped up in the outer shell of who we are.

All we want is to look better…to fit in a bathing suit this summer…to keep our man from looking at skinnier women.  What’s your main reason for becoming fit?

Some reasons are better than others.  But what’s most important is that we don’t give up before we have even started.

There are a number of ways this can happen.  One is when we set unrealistic goals or we have unrealistic expectations.

Dropping ten pounds in a month isn’t likely.  And even if you can make it happen, the method of doing it is probably not healthy.

Losing a dress size, that’s a more attainable goal than starting off with the hope to lose five dress sizes.  Small bites (literally and figuratively) and small steps will eventually get you where you need to be.

You can also give up if you haven’t addressed the internal issues you struggle with.  What you look like on the outside won’t solve other problems, like self-esteem or unhappiness.

There are all sorts of reasons that you might feel like giving up before you’ve even gotten started.  But don’t.  The only way you can be successful is to push through it.
