Treating Urinary Tract Infections in Children

cranberryUrinary tract infections are miserable.  As someone who suffers from urinary tract infections and have allergies to antibiotics, I know the struggle and the solutions.  However, it is always very important that you seek medical attention if you suspect your child has an infection.  Follow your doctor’s advice and do not use treatments mentioned in lieu of prescribed medication.

Due to my allergies to antibiotics, I have learned to use natural remedies on the onset of an infection. The moment I feel a twinge of a problem I begin treatment.  It is important to catch it before a full blown infection if possible.  However, these treatments can also be used to speed recovery and prevent infections.

Signs of Urinary Tract Infection in Preschoolers

  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Enuresis
  • Urinary symptoms: Dysuria, urgency, frequency

Cranberry juice and blueberry juice are both effective in treating and preventing urinary tract infections.  Try mixing it with sparkling water which will add the fun but not the sugar.
Have your child drink lots of water.  Preschoolers should drink 1.3 to 1.7 liters of water a day.
A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with water (you can add honey) a day can treat and prevent urinary tract infections.
Pineapples also help relieve symptoms and heal quicker.
Yogurt is another treatment. It must contain live and active cultures to be effective.  Make sure the yogurt you purchase contains live or active cultures and that it is low in sugar.
To help ease symptoms you may want to give your child a hot compress.  Allow your child ample time to rest so her body has plenty of time to heal.
