I must have a thousand sheets of construction paper. It is one of the least used items in my home. Honestly, I have no idea why. I buy it but it hardly gets used. Worse, I buy double when it is on sale. Seems rather silly when I only use it a few times a year. So today, I decided to use up some of the construction paper. My girls looked at me like I had gone mad. They must have wondered what on earth could this colored paper be and was it magic that turned it red, pink, blue, green and yellow?
We had a great time just making regular shapes, faces, paper dolls, and animals. Then, I had the brilliant idea of making a family tree. The idea was sparked from my older child doing a report on ancestry. Now, the concept is easy. You simply cut out a tree trunk from brown construction paper and paste it another piece of construction paper in your choice of color. Then, you cut out green leaves. On each green leaf you will write a name of a family member. Then place the leaves on the tree making sure to connect the parents on one branch the children on the next, aunts and uncles on another branch and so on. Use a standard family tree layout. Simple and a fun project to teach your children about family.
The construction paper hit the fan when my child decided she wanted to make every member of the family out of construction paper. I am certainly no Van Gogh of construction paper. She reminded me that she is the artist in the family and she would proceed. Not too long after her declaration, I had a table covered in paper and a floor covered in scraps. But she had a blast trying to make her sisters out of construction paper and then gluing them on the tree. It was quite a mess but I did accomplish one thing; we used a lot of construction paper.
