You may want to consider storing a few cases of freeze dried food in your food storage. I do not advocate having your entire food storage be made up of freeze dried food because your family will not be used to eating it and you will need to make sure that you have a source of water available to reconstitute the food. However supplementing your food with freeze dried items will give you a wider variety of food items, which would otherwise be unavailable to you.
You can supplement with items such as freeze dried fruit. Examples of these include strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. These fruits are not available canned. You can store them as jam or pie filling which is overly sweet. A healthier option would be to store them as freeze dried. It would be easy to rotate these as well, because you can use them on your cereal or as you prepare deserts or other items using fruit.
There are vegetables, which don’t can well, which can be supplied in the freeze dried form. Examples of these include broccoli, asparagus, and zucchini. You can supplement the usually supply of canned green beans, corn, and peas. This will add to the variety of vegetables, which are available for your family.
Freeze dried fruit and vegetables retain more of their vitamins and other nutrients because they are not put through a cooking process. Freeze dried items are easy to reconstitute. You can also purchase freeze dried meats and TVP (textured vegetable protein). I know that people will mix TVP in with ground meat to stretch it further. If you are considering storing TVP, I recommend doing this as a way of rotating your food storage. It will also help your family grow use to the food.
You may also want to consider storing powdered milk and powdered eggs. These items are needed in cooking, and you may not have fresh items available to you. These are easy to rotate as well. You can use them while cooking, and your family will not know the difference.
