Because we are on a limited budget, it sometimes takes a bit of creativity to have low-cost fun, and free is even better. Today was a good summer day in the free department for the kids.
After an early morning dentist appointment (free, but not necessarily fun), we headed over to our local library for their Tuesday morning program. Today, the kids got to make their own bubble solution and wands and also experience making giant bubbles. We went home with the wands and a recipe to make our own giant bubble solution.
We took advantage of the trip to refresh our stash of library books, and I took out a few magazines as well. Nothing says summer like flipping casually through magazines, right? You can get a ton of them free through promotional offers, but in the interest of not having clutter around, I’m opting for the library instead.
A quick trip home for some lunch and to change into bathing suits. Then it was off to the generous neighbors pool, where the kids got to swim, and I got to read those magazines and chat.
The point to this fun day is that it didn’t take a lot of money, or any money at all. There are many fun activities to fill up the summer that are very affordable. Try making smores, taking a nature walk, enjoying community events, doing crafts, running around in a sprinklers, going to the park, or just setting up all of those play dates that you can never get to during the school year. Organize a summer camp in the neighborhood, either on your own or with some of the other families on the block. Of course, the summer can be educational, too thanks to museum programs and plenty of opportunity to just kick back and read.
How do you best like to spend your fun summer days?
