There are many people who choose to celebrate St. Patricks’ Day by enjoying some alcoholic beverages. Families, however, can find plenty of family-friendly ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with their kids. Here’s a list of idea for parents who want to give their kids something fun to do this St. Patrick’s Day.
Wear Green
It has been said that a person must wear green on St. Patrick’s Day in order to avoid getting pinched. It might not be a great idea to introduce that part of the holiday to your kids. There are also a lot of people who wear green on St. Patrick’s Day just because green is associated with Ireland.
Help your kids find something green to wear. Or, let them choose some green clothing for themselves. They may come up with some very unique outfits!
Green Scavenger Hunt
How many green things are inside your home? Have your kids go on a scavenger hunt to see how many they can find. For extra fun, let them use the camera on your photo to take pictures of green things as they find them.
If your kids absolutely love this activity, they can do it again, but look for orange things the second time around. Orange is another color that is in the Irish flag.
Coloring Sheets
Get out the crayons and washable markers! You can find free, printable, St. Patrick’s Day coloring sheets on various websites. One excellent place to start is Crayola.com. They are completely safe to use. Another good choice is the Disney Family website.
Listen to Celtic Music
Find some awesome Celtic music for your kids to listen to. You might have some favorites in mind that you would like them to hear. Put together a kid-safe playlist for your children to enjoy. Some classic songs include: “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”, “Danny Boy”, and “The Unicorn Song”. Personally, I’ve discovered that toddlers will spontaneously start dancing if you play them some Irish jigs!
Watch Riverdance
Have your children ever watched Riverdance (or any other kind of dancing?) If they loved the watching The Nutcracker last Christmas they might be ready for Riverdance for St. Patrick’s Day. In addition to Celtic music, it also features plenty of Celtic inspired dancing.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Will there be a St. Patrick’s Day parade happening in the town or city you live in? Little kids tend to find parades to be exciting. Make sure your child’s hearing is protected from the loud noises. Give them some earplugs. An alternative would be to watch a St. Patrick’s Day parade online from the quiet and safety of your home.
