It has been said that kids can “lose” some of what they learned during the school year if they don’t practice those skills while on summer vacation. Summer reading programs can inspire kids to read books during the months when school is out. Your child could benefit from participating in a Summer reading program.
Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program
This Summer reading program began in May and will end on September 5, 2017. Children need to fill out a Summer Reading Journal (which can be printed from the Barnes & Noble website in English or in Spanish).
Kids must read any eight books and record them on the journal. Parents are not required to make any purchases from Barnes & Noble in order for their children to participate in the reading program. The books they read can be ones they have at home, or from the library.
Children who complete their Summer Reading Journal, and bring it to Barnes & Noble, will receive a free book from the list that is on the back of the journal.
Sylvan Learning Book Adventure
The Sylvan Learning Book Adventure is a free, online reading program for children in grades K-8, brought to you by the experts at Sylvan Learning.
It includes a Kid’s Zone where children can boost their reading skills. The Kid’s Zone has a Book Finder, free printable stuff, fun games, and a Prize Library that shows all the prizes that can be redeemed with the points earned from taking quizzes.
Scholastic Summer Challenge
Kids can go on a “Happy Camper” Reading Adventure. Children are to read as many books as they can, and then log their minutes to win “awesome virtual prizes”. Scholastic has put together lists of books that are appropriate for different ages. The youngest list is for babies “0-2”, and the oldest one is for “Young Adult”.
Books-A-Million Summer Reading Challenge
Books-A-Million (or BAM!) has a Summer Reading Challenge where kids can receive a free Maze Runner series water bottle. Download the Reading Journal from the BAM! website to get started.
Kids choose any four books from The Reading Challenge section in-store or online. They must document the books they have read in their Summer Reading Challenge Journal. Bring the completed journal to a BAM! store associate to receive a free Maze Runner Series water bottle. The completed journal must be signed by the child and also by a parent or guardian.
