How to have an Eco-Friendly Christmas

Concerned about the effects of climate change? There are some things you can do to have a more environmentally friendly Christmas this year. If you’ve already started decorating, you can use these ideas next Christmas.

Adopt a Living Christmas Tree
Salon reported that it is possible to borrow a potted pine tree that you adopt for Christmas and decorate as you see fit. Check with your local forestry non-profits to see if they are renting potted trees this year.

When Christmas is over, you can return the potted tree to them. The forestry non-profit will re-plant the tree outdoors and re-integrate it into the urban canopy.

Re-Use Your Artificial Tree
The Los Angles Times reported that it takes nine years for an artificial tree to be a better choice than buying a real tree every year. Do not throw out your artificial tree after one use. Keep re-using it. Eventually, you may need to seek out where to recycle it.

Don’t Trash Your Real Tree
After Christmas, your real tree can be added to your compost (in small pieces). It is a good idea to check the local laws about this before you do it. Your city might have a tree recycling program that turns real Christmas trees into mulch for gardens. Be sure to remove all decorations and lights first!

Use Recyclable Wrap
Brown paper bags can be cut and used like wrapping paper. Newspaper can be used for wrapping, and easily recycled. Not all Christmas wrapping paper is recyclable! Another option is to wrap gifts in cloth that the recipient can use. Try a festive towel, a soft scarf, or a pillowcase.

Reusable Christmas Gifts
Choose gifts that your loved ones need and can use multiple times. Some ideas include: canvas bags for grocery shopping, glass water bottles, stainless steel straws, and journals.
