Summer Fun During COVID-19

Are your kids sad because they cannot go out and enjoy the summer activities they were looking forward to? They aren’t the only ones! The COVID-19 quarantine is hard for kids of all ages (and many adults) to adjust to. Here are some ideas to try that might improve your children’s moods.

Parents can start by asking their child, tween, or teen how they are feeling. Get them talking about their emotions. Being able to share what they are thinking and feeling can make people (of all ages) feel heard and understood.

Little kids will enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool in the backyard. Older kids might want to jump through a sprinkler or have a squirt gun fight with their siblings on hot days. Families that have their own backyard pools can use it to cool off together.

Pick a book that has already been made into a movie. Parents can read the book to their kids. Doing so enables readers of all levels to follow along and enjoy the story. Take time to talk about whatever just happened in the story. When the book comes to an end, it is time to watch the movie! Encourage your kids to point out the differences between the two.

Your kids might not be able to attend summer camp during COVID-19, but they can still camp in the backyard. Set up a tent. Bring out the sleeping bags. Younger kids may need a parent to spend the night in the tent with them.

Set up a grill, and have dinner outside together. Catch some fireflies in a jar as the sun goes down. Remember to let the fireflies go! Roast some marshmallows over a fire pit. The goal is to spark your children’s imagination and sense of wonder while under “stay at home” orders.
