Dinner Discussions on Gospel Topics

A great way to reinforce lessons at home is to have dinner discussions with your children. You can choose a different discussion topic for each night that you have dinner together as a family. This is a great review for the entire family, but especially as you cover the topics that each family member learned in class during the week. This week’s discussion topics are based on week 27 lessons in the Primary manuals.

The Nursery and Sunbeam classes were based on family prayer this week. The story of Jesus praying with the Nephites was used to illustrate the point of praying with your family. You may want to review the story with your family. You can also discuss why you pray as a family. You may want to cover the basics of saying a prayer and the importance of being reverent during prayer.

If your child is between four and seven they learned about the importance of sharing with each other. They learned the story of feeding the five thousand and the boy who was willing to share his food with the Savior. You may want to have your children tell a time that they were able to share something during the day.

If you have child who is eight to eleven this week he learned about Samuel—The Boy Prophet. Each week the children are assigned a reading assignment to complete at home. This week’s assignment is 1 Samuel 3:1-10 and 3:19-20. You may want to review this story with your child. The class also discussed how to receive promptings from the Lord, and to listen to them. You can discuss this aspect as well.

The discussions can include all the family members. The younger family members will benefit from hearing what their older siblings have to say about the stories and applying the principles to their lives. This is a great opportunity to extend the lessons on Sunday into your home.
