Annie: A Musical Gem from the 1980s

When I was little more than five, my mother took me to see a musical film by the name of Annie. Immediately, I fell in love with this musical that, though not perfect, still remains a nostalgic favorite of many children of the 80s and will no doubt charm a new generation on DVD.

The story of an orphan, Annie, who must attempt to keep her spirits up despite the poor conditions of the orphanage in which she resides with the sinister Miss Hannigan (Carol Burnett) who oversees the orphanage, Annie is a classic tale that continues to charm little ones more than twenty years after its release.

Annie secretly hopes that, one day, the parents who left her at the orphanage will one day return for her and sweep her away to a perfect family life. The only thing she has to remind her of her parents is a locket that was left with her as an infant.

Things start to look up for Annie when Grace, assistant to millionaire Daddy Warbucks, arrives at the orphanage to take home an orphan boy. Unfortunately, Miss Hannigan’s orphanage is one only for girls. She is, however, won over by Annie and takes her home instead. What begins as a fairy tale ending for Annie soon escalates into a nightmare as Miss Hannigan’s brother and wife come into town intent on making trouble.

Annie is a fun, uncomplicated story that will delight younger viewers, especially those who love musicals. Annie is filled with music that will probably cause some viewers to beg for the soundtrack. Well, okay, at least it did for me.

Annie can be found on DVD at amazon.com. You can also find the Annie soundtrack at Amazon on CD as well.
