Make cute crafts that look like fruit with simple supplies such as paper plates, craft paint or watercolors, beans or beads, and a little glue.
Watermelon
Fold a paper plate in half and crease well. It will become the shape of a slice of watermelon. You can even cut a little piece away near the crease to look like someone took a bite out of it. Mix red paint with just a little white and paint the paper plate, leaving about an inch at the bottom. You can paint the bottom green, or glue on green felt, yarn, or glitter to make a “rind.” When dry, glue on black beads or beans painted black for seeds. The watermelon slice will stand up all by itself. Also makes a cute place card for birthday parties.
Apples and Oranges
You can make a whole apple, one with a bite missing, or an apple that has been eaten with only the core remaining. You can make all three to create a set. Turn a paper plate upside down. Cut it so the top is wider than the bottom, or use pinking shears or scrapbook scissors to cut away a “bite” near the top on one side, or to cut out both sides for an apple core. Paint the plate red where appropriate. Cut a leaf or two from green felt and glue to the top. You can make green or golden apples too. For oranges, just paint the upside down plate bright orange, or cover with orange felt to add texture, and add leaves.
Cherry Pie
Paint a paper plate red. When dry, glue tan strips of felt in a criss-cross pattern, weaving to create the look of a lattice top pie. Glue on balls from a string of ball fringe or glue on red beads as cherries. For blueberry pie, use violet or dark blue paint and beads.
