Evidence: Science and the Bible

If you have read many of my blogs you might have noticed that I have mentioned that I am a scientist. When I am not writing for Families.com I work as a Chemistry Content Author, and in the fall I will begin working on my Masters degree in biology. Why am I telling you this? I am telling you this because I am excited to write about the next topic in the series I have been writing about evidence we have for the existence of God. This evidence has to do with science and the Bible.

While the Bible is not a science book, if and when the Bible speaks of scientific things it is always correct. The Bible is an extraordinary book, inspired by the Lord. Many times when the Bible speaks of scientific things, the scientific things it speaks of were not even known at the time the Bible was written.

A great example of this is found in Isaiah 40:21-23:

“Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.”

Did you catch the scientific tidbit in the passage? In verse twenty-two Isaiah writes that the Lord “sits above the circle of the earth.” Even in the days of Christopher Columbus a few thought that the earth was flat. Yet here, in the Bible, the prophet Isaiah many years ago, inspired of the Lord, wrote that the Lord “sits above the circle of the earth.”

An observer of today’s society could easily reach the conclusion that science and the Bible do not mix. In the scientific world a belief in God, and especially a Biblical belief in God, seems to be very rare. Many scientists take the attitude that if really understand and practice good science there is no place for God. However, I am a scientist and a Christian, and I truly believe that the Bible is accurate when it describes things dealing with science.
