I woke up this morning to, what to me at least, is sad news. I read in the Internet Movie Database news section that Queer Eye for the Straight Guy has been cancelled. The groundbreaking Bravo show is only in its third season, but as one host (Jai Rodriguez) said, it seems longer because of overexposure.
In case you have never seen Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, it was based on the premise that five gay men could come into the less than spectacular home of a straight man and make it over in a very fashionable way. But they didn’t just stop at the home, they also made over the man, not just his clothes, but often teaching him how to eat in a upscale restaurant, how to cook at home, what wine to select for a dinner, even how to dance with his partner. Each of the five hosts had a specialty – Kyan Douglas was grooming, Ted Allen was food and wine, Jai Rodriguez was Culture, Thom Filicia was Interior Design, and Carson Kressley was fashion.
It seemed that almost as soon as the show hit the airways, it was a huge success. Suddenly, the Fab Five (as they were labeled) were everywhere! A CD of music from the show was released as were books and DVDs featuring Fab Five tips. They were on Oprah, Ellen, and the cover of countless magazines.
I suppose it was overexposure that killed the show because it does seem like it has been on longer than three years to me as well. But I still love the show and hate to see it end. I think the hosts were such a big hit because they were all so personable and I believe they may have broken down gay stereotypes some people had. And I loved their makeovers! I wish they would come redo my house or my wardrobe. They always seemed like really cool guys that would be fun to have as friends.
But don’t worry, the Fab Five may not be on Bravo anymore, but they will still be around. Their makeovers have been very popular with stars and Tom just revamped a home of Jennifer Lopez. Jai is reportedly working on a television project. And I am sure we will hear from Ted, Carson, and Kyan in the future as well.
What about you? Did you enjoy watching this show or did you find it inappropriate?
