Tips for Living Healthier With Your Baby

When it comes to having a baby, there is a lot to getting your house ready. You can also take care of your baby by employing a few of the following tips. Think of these as things you don’t always think about – that’s why we’re going to list them here so you can remember them for later.

  • Leave Your Shoes at the Door – Toddlers and babies live on the floor – the last thing you want to do is track in every dirt, germ or who knows what from outside to their floor
  • Your baby doesn’t need a bath every day – Despite popular opinion, your baby doesn’t need a daily bath. Unlike adults, babies do not perspire and develop B.O. – a good sponge bath will often suffice and protect their sensitive skin
  • Medication for your Baby at Daycare – When your baby is ill or needing doses of medication, be sure to give your babysitter or daycare very specific instructions as to when and how much they should have
  • Formula Swaps for Spit-Up – If your baby is on formula and they are spitting up regularly, most of us would automatically look to change the formula brand in order to help them out – talk to the pediatrician first so that you aren’t making it harder to diagnose a problem like a milk allergy
  • Pretend to share bites – You can give your baby your tooth decay bacteria if you eat off their spoon and then offer them a bite and vice versa – it may sound weird but you can transmit tooth decay to your baby’s mouth and that’s something to be avoided
  • Dress your baby in your layers – my husband’s step mother gave me the best advice – she told me to judge the house temperature and the outdoor temperature by how I felt – I didn’t need to over-bundle the baby – put the baby in the same layers I was wearing
  • Rectal Temperatures are better than under the arm – if you are worried about your baby having a temperature, take a rectal temp rather than under the arm – it will give you the most accurate temperature and you need to know if your baby has a fever

Most of this advice came from my mom, my mother-in-law and my step mother-in-law – the best advice comes from family and from those who have been there. What is the best advice you got from your parents with regard to your baby?
