For most women, the baby’s father acts as labor coach. There may be instances where the father is unavailable or unable to be in the delivery room. There are many reasons for this: the mother may no longer be with the father, the father may have issues or fears about being present, or he may be far away. Many women have husbands who are deployed with the military.
Whatever the reason, you may need to consider an alternative coach for your labor. When selecting the best person to be with you during labor, there are some things you should consider. You should be comfortable with the person. Mothers, sisters and best friends often fall into this category.
The person should have a similar philosophy about labor and birth. If you want a natural birth and your mom thinks it’s crazy not to take the drugs, she may not be the best choice. You want someone who will support your choices for your birth. You will be vulnerable during labor and you want someone who will advocate for you with medical staff.
You want someone who will be involved with the birth and the baby. A family member often fits this description. Your coach will have to attend child birth classes with you. Make sure the person is someone who will be there and is willing to attend all necessary classes.
Involve your coach in writing your birth plan. The plan will include all your wishes for labor, birth and the period just after the baby is born. If your coach is familiar with all parts of the birth plan, he or she will be in a better position to advocate for you in the hospital. Be sure the coach, doctor and hospital all have a copy of the plan.
If your chosen coach has never been present for a birth, you may want to consider hiring a doula. A doula will be with you throughout your labor and birth. She will advocate for you with the medical staff and support you and your coach throughout the birthing process. Women with a doula present have a higher rate of natural birth and a lower rate of c section.
