Okay, I admit, I was shocked after hearing this one (though I’m not sure why, considering the longevity of a Hollywood romance is virtually an oxymoron), but alas various media outlets are reporting that “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria and San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker have split up.
PEOPLE magazine reports it got a tip from a source that said the demise of the romance is due to distance: “It’s distance and demanding careers and not living in same city. It didn’t happen yesterday. It’s been going on for a while,” the source said.
I first heard about the rumored break up on “Access Hollywood” yesterday afternoon, but at that time Longoria’s rep denied the split was official. Rather Longoria’s camp issued a statement which read: “Eva and Tony are going through a very difficult time right now, just like any other couple with extremely demanding careers.” But now, it seems a number of newspapers are in fact reporting that the super star couple is no longer together.
One newspaper quoted a source close to the couple as saying: “They did break up. It’s amicable. They are talking and trying to figure the best course of action for their future. They are trying to work things out.” “They are trying to work things out.” What does that mean exactly? Are they together? Are they apart? Are they still dating, or are they “taking a break?” (I suppose it really is none of my business, but, hey, inquiring minds want to know.) Who knows? What we do know is that the Parker and the rest of his San Antonio Spurs’ teammates left Texas yesterday to begin training camp in France. Meanwhile, Longoria remains in Los Angeles where she is filming “Desperate Housewives.”
Longoria and Parker met in November 2004 and while at first neither would admit they were dating each other, by August 2005, Longoria confirmed they were a couple and since then they have made their affections known in a variety of public places. In April, Longoria told PEOPLE she is happiest when in a relationship. “There’s no way in the world I would rather be single,” she said. “Tony is too. I’ve said the only reason Tony and I are going to stay together forever is because we’re too lazy to look for someone else.”
I really believed the next announcement we would hear from the couple was that they were engaged. After all, when Longoria was on “Oprah” last season she admitted that she was “madly in love” with Parker and said it was just a matter of time before they would be married. She even revealed that Parker told her that when he asked for her hand in marriage he planned to do so in an “extravagant” way. Not to mention the couple recently bought a new home together in San Antonio where they lived when she was not filming “Desperate Housewives.”
Is this really the end of the Longoria/Parker coupling? I guess only time will tell.
