Safety Tips for Trick or Treating

Trick or Treating is a popular activity that our kids love to do at the end of every October on October 31st. So here are some tips to make it fun and safe for the whole family.

  • Children should go out during daylight hours only unless accompanied by an adult
  • Young children should never go out alone and they should not go out with an older sibling unless that sibling is significantly older
  • Older children who are out trick or treating should have a designated time to return home and their route should be planned and stuck to so adults will know where to find them
  • Parents should always try to accompany their children or coordinate with another adult so that kids have someone looking out for them
  • Kids need to be reminded to stay in well lit areas at all times and should never take a short cut through an alley or a field that deviates from the planned route
  • Kids traveling together should stay together in a group and not break up or split up sides or houses on their route
  • Children should eat nothing from their trick or treating until they bring it home to be examined by someone else
  • Children should be reminded to never enter a stranger’s home or car and this is another reason why adults should always be with them
  • Kids should carry a flashlight, glow stick or have reflective tape put along their costume somewhere to make them stand out so cars can see them while they are out trick or treating at night
