When to Seek Help Getting Pregnant

If you’ve been trying to get pregnant without any luck, you may wonder when it is time to seek help. There is no easy answer to this question. The general statistics show that a woman has a 55% chance of getting pregnant within three months of trying to conceive. She has a 72% chance after six months and an 85% chance of conceiving within a year.

Most healthy women under the age of thirty five are told to wait for a year before seeking help from an infertility specialist. If you are over thirty five, or closer to forty, you may want to consider a consultation after six months of trying. This gives you more time to try and be successful in getting pregnant.

There may be times when you should seek help sooner. If you have certain medical conditions, you may want to see an infertility specialist. Some of these conditions include: endometriosis, irregular menstrual cycles, problems with your cycle (long, heavy, painful) or a past gynecological surgery. These conditions may interfere with conception and waiting for treatment may be detrimental.

Some women can get pregnant, but then have miscarriages. In many cases, a reproductive endocrinologist may be able to help. If this is the case, seek help sooner. If you have two consecutive miscarriages, don’t wait to seek help. In certain cases, the cause can be detected and the doctor may be able to help you have a successful pregnancy.

These are just guidelines. Listen to your intuition. This can be a very powerful thing. If you have a strong feeling that something is wrong, make an appointment. The doctor will evaluate you and help you determine if there is a problem. Your intuition may be right. The doctor may tell you to continue to try to conceive naturally or may begin to look for a cause.
