A Résumé For The Electronic Age

How can you write an electronic résumé? The answer is easier than you might think, for it is done by simply removing all highlighting, which prevents proper computer scanning. Once it is scanned, your résumé becomes “cyber-fodder” as it can be searched by companies of all types through the use of keywords. It is estimated that this type of selection process will dominate this computer age in which we are all trying our best to survive and thrive. Many companies today have sophisticated equipment that scans thousands of résumés. According to statistics, however, it does seem that networking is just as important if not more so when it comes to getting interviews.

Like most things in life, some sound judgment is required when it comes to posting your résumé on the Internet. Many Internet career sites provide an area in which job hunters can post their résumés for access by potential employers. The problem with this is that access to your private information is not limited to just those potential employers. Your personal information is and can be read by people whom you don’t know and might not even want to know. Do post your résumé, but do it carefully and only after insuring the safety of the particular job board or company. (Run the name through Google and see what you get.)

An electronic résumé is not just another pretty face. It must be plain and without embellishments in order not to confuse the scanner. It also must contain keywords that the hiring manager is most likely to search for regarding the type of work you want to do. Therefore, at the top of the page, don’t just use one or two words to describe your job title. Think of a string of words that might work well as synonyms, for example: Operations Manager, Administrative Manager, General Manager.

Keep an open mind and watch where you are going.

Good luck!
