Whenever parents decide to homeschool their children, the question arises, “Will my child be able to go to college if they’ve been homeschooled?” I know that’s certainly a question that the grandparents ask. There’s concern over how a college would look at transcripts when there really aren’t any, just whatever system the parents chose to record what schooling has been accomplished. There’s concern that the child might not be able to acclimatize to the college environment and do well.
I found this article in my local newspaper, the Daily Herald, on October 1st, and after hanging on to it, first for my own files and then for a friend, I decided to share it with you here on Families.com.
While attending a college job fair near her home of Columbia, Missouri, a homeschooled student by the name of Sara Kianmehr met a representative from Columbia College, a small private school that was agreeable to taking a look at her homeschool transcripts. It was a perfect match. The article states: “With colleges and universities aggressively competing for the best students, a growing number of institutions are actively courting homebound high achievers like Kianmehr, who took community college courses her senior year of high school and hopes to eventually study filmmaking at New York University or another top graduate school.”
I have slight issues with the term “homebound.” It makes it sound like a homeschooled child is forced to stay home, perhaps with some sort of contagious disease, rather than from conscious choice. Oh, well – their choice of words. I quote ‘em as I read ‘em.
Can homeschoolers go to college? They most certainly can. Can they excel? You bet. Perhaps there will be more for them to prove. Perhaps they will be questioned, perhaps they will slide into a different niche than the other students. But they have every right and every opportunity to go to college, and thrive there.
