When it comes to fashion it seems celebrities are able to get away with wearing just about anything. Sure they face the threat of ending up on Mr. Blackwell’s or PEOPLE magazine’s “Worst Dressed List,” but for some even that kind of publicity is welcomed. In my opinion, many a Hollywood star could careless what they are photographed wearing, which could be why many are documented wearing some rather, well, how can I put this tactfully… interesting apparel? And, I’m not talking about red carpet fashion statements such as Bjork’s swan dress or Cher’s black-feathered-whatever-that thing-was designed by Bob Mackie, which she donned for the Academy Awards years ago. I’m talking about the outfits that A-list celebrities are photographed wearing out to dinner or to charity events.
Here are two examples of trends that some celebs seem to be trying to resurrect:
Knee Socks
If knee socks are in fashion now then I was way ahead of my time. Or, I should say, the nuns that dictated my school dress code were way ahead of their time. If you went to parochial school like I did then you know that knee socks are something we wore with school uniforms (ours matched our navy blue pleated skirts, white shirts, and brown shoes) as children. But along with all things 80’s — t-shirts, haircuts, and pants (See below)– they are making a resurgence on adults. Actresses Lindsay Lohan, Molly Sims and Kirsten Dunst have recently balanced out black and white knee socks with a flash of thigh while pairing them with shorts and short skirts. I’m not sure what look they are trying to go for, but the reason I wore them as a child was because I HAD to… I don’t know what these gals are using as an excuse.
Eighties Fashion
Actresses Lindsay Lohan and Mary-Kate Olsen were both born in the mid-eighties, so perhaps they are paying homage to the decade of their birth by donning some of the decade’s biggest musical acts on their t-shirts. Recently, Lohan was photographed wearing a Motley Crue t-shirt (the band released “Dr. Feelgood” in 1989). While Olsen was recently documented dressed in head-to-toe 80’s, pairing a classic “Frankie says Relax” t-shirt (Frankie Goes to Hollywood released “Relax” in 1983) with skinny jeans with zippers at the ankles. (Yikes—that was the uniform of choice for 80’s mallrats while I was growing up. Dare I admit that I still have a pair of GUESS jeans with zippers at the ankles somewhere in my house?) But, they aren’t the only young fans of 80’s pop t-shirts — Jessica Simpson (born in 1980) was recently spotted in a t-shirt emblazoned with “The Police.”
So, where do you stand? Are you ready for an 80’s fashion comeback?
