What’s holding YOU back from the job of your dreams? Why can’t you find what you want, especially since you are looking so sincerely? Read on for some help and hope.
The things that hold us back in everything we do boil down to one thing and one thing only: ourselves. Better put, the internal and external issues that comprise our inner core dictate our actions and our thoughts. For example, if you are set on a specific and very high salary (whether realistic or not), a specific location and work schedule (let’s say a two day week), you are going to have trouble spotting that perfect opportunity. You will have to learn to compromise the conflict in your values. For you, the solution may not lie in following the saintly example of Mother Theresa, but surely somewhere between the two extremes of sainthood and hedonism there’s a place for you and the fulfillment of your working dreams.
Lack of self-esteem is another factor that severely restricts the fulfillment of our goals. People rise to the level of their self-esteem and no further. Think about what you were put on this planet to do. That will help get you out of the self-defeating entanglement of low self-worth. Use your talents and make them multiply. Get career counseling if you need some help. Don’t be afraid. Other internal issues concern a lack of focus, a lack of possibilities, too many skills and master of none, and too few skills.
External issues are the same horse, but of a slightly different color. They might concern the feeling that one is too old or too young to land the right job. Too little education or being over qualified also come into play here. Don’t forget the biggies of race or creed or physical disability. These feelings have their place, because certainly prejudice is out there, but don’t let that stop you from evolving into a “can do” kind of employee. You can do it. You are the little engine that could. You must believe that you can and you will.
