It seems lately that I have heard so many people talking negatively about their child’s school and teacher (not on this board, of course!). Besides the fact that it makes me want to tear my hair out and tell the people to homeschool (I know; not an option for every parent, but if all they can do is complain then perhaps they can teach their child better than a teacher can) if they aren’t happy with the education their child is getting, it has also left me wondering. What do people want in a teacher?
So there it is, my question is out there now. In a perfect world if you could handpick your child’s teacher, what qualities would you expect him to have? How do you expect him to act? What teaching style do you expect him to use to teach your child and the other 25 students in the classroom? What do you expect him to do for discipline? Would he give homework? How much, if any? Would you expect the teacher to have his master’s degree? Why? A masters degree doesn’t always mean a better teacher, it just means the teacher makes more money than other teachers without a masters degrees. Would the teacher touch on sex-ed subjects or would you rather him not? What happens if the answer is no because you want to talk to your child about it at home, but there are 15 other children in the classroom already experimenting and their parents won’t talk about it? What would you expect the teacher you handpicked to do?
How much would you expect this teacher to be paid? How many hours a day do you expect the teacher to work, including taking work home for grading or lesson planning?
After reading these questions, I pose my question to you all again. If you could handpick the perfect teacher, what would he or she be like? Is it possible to ever have a perfect teacher?
