Traveling in the Internet Age

I went to a meeting this past week at a coffee shop across town I had never been to. Before I went I got onto mapquest and looked at the directions of how to get there, wrote them down, and managed t get there in once piece a short while later.

Another person who was attending the meeting used the GPS in her car to give her directions, got horrible lost, and was 45 minutes late to the event. Whether he tardiness was a computer error or a human error no one will ever know. After sitting through a two hour meeting with her, I imagine it was a little of both.

The situation got me thinking however about how computers have drastically affected every aspect of our lives, in this case how we were going to get somewhere.

Twenty years ago, if I was going to go to a new place I would look the business up in the phonebook, give them a call, and get directions. Now in an age of computers I can do all of those things without ever having to get up from my computer.

I actually cannot even remember how you booked a plane ticket before there were computers. I’m actually fairly certain that I have never purchased a plane ticket any other way. Computers make it east and simple to look up when flights are, and find the lowest fare, all in seconds.

Computers truly have revolutionized the way we think about travel. Everything can be done on a computer so quickly that computer in some makes us quicker when we travel. Computers help us figure out where our destination is, and can help us either dive to, or book transportation to anywhere in seconds.

Do you think that computers have dramatically changed how you travel?
