Surprise Creatures Game

Here is my favorite drawing game that requires no particular skill and can include anyone who is old enough to draw a basic form. This is not so much a game, per se, as a funny creation you make with other players. It’s noncompetitive and the results are worth keeping.

I dug this example out of my purse. I can usually find one of these drawings in my purse because my kids love to do this while we’re waiting for appointments or in the car. My 12-year-old son and I drew this one.

True confession: Sometimes I play this game in church with my son on the back of the church program. We do it very discreetly, but I usually have to swallow a giggle or two when the results are in. I’m certainly not advocating irreverence, and I know I’m being a bad example, but it does pass the time nicely when the speaker is a little long-winded.

You can play this game any time and anywhere you happen to have a piece of paper and a pencil handy. Two to four people can play.

Fold the paper into four equal sections. Write a label on each section off to the far left side. Label the top section “head,” the second section “torso,” the third section “legs,” and the bottom section “feet.”

The first person draws the head of the person or animal or creature, extending the lines of the neck just over the fold so the next person can see them. Fold the top section back so it’s hidden.

The next person uses the neck lines as a guide and draws the torso, again extending the lines just beyond the fold so the next person can continue the drawing. Fold back the second section so both the first and second are hidden.

Next comes the legs, and then the feet. After the feet are finished, unfold the creature and see what you’ve created.
