Wind Cave National Park

Because my family and I love the outdoors so much, we make it a point to visit as many national parks and forests as possible. I wanted to share some information about one of our adventures in the Wind Cave National Park. Located in Hot Springs, South Dakota, this national park is rated as boasting one of the longest and most complex caves in the world. Stretched out over more than 28,000 acres of pine forest and mixed grass prairie, you can enjoy cave exploration, as well as wonderful wildlife. In fact, wildlife such as elk, bison, mule deer, coyote, pronghorn, and prairie dogs live on this prairie, being one of just a few remaining.

Within the cave, you will find a beautiful display of boxwork, which is a distinct formation comprised of thin calcite fins that look much like honeycomb. I highly recommend you take a tour of the cave with a professional ranger guide. You will need to purchase tickets, which are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Keep in mind that if you visit the Wind Cave National Park during the summertime, which is the busiest season, you will stand in long lines to enter the cave. However, you can call 605-745-4600 to make tour reservations.

In addition to touring the cave, you can also enjoy a number of activities to include backcountry camping, some of the best in the country. You will be shown where you can camp in the northwest region of the park, which offers a number of plants and animals. One of the best places to stay is the Elk Mountain Campground. There, some 75 campsites are available and the campgrounds are clean and organized.

Of course, this national park is also an excellent place to visit for individuals who love hiking or backpacking. We found some great trails that were perfect for adults and children. Now, while we preferred to stay in a tent and sleeping bags, you can choose to stay in a number of nearby lodges. Then, I recommend you also take time to stop by the Visitor’s Center where you will discover two exhibit rooms that teach you all about cave formations, exploration, history, park wildlife, and much more. This is a great way to spend time with the kids or simply take a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
