By now I’m sure you have your Thanksgiving menu set. But, how are you doing on styling your dining room table for the big feast? On the years that my parents hosted the Thanksgiving festivities my mom used to fret about the table decorations. My dad tried to convince her that the turkey was an adequate centerpiece and flowers were really not necessary, and no one paid attention to how the candles were arranged or if the napkins matched the tablecloth. All my mom heard was: “blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada…” and on she went trying to put together a style update prior to the guests arriving.
If you are looking for ways to add some spark to your Thanksgiving table consider some of these ideas:
Go White
I know a couple that goes formal every Thanksgiving. They rent formal tableware and glasses for the holidays (yes, that convenience is available). But, you can spare yourself the rental expense and still achieve an elegant look by going white. Neutral and white dinnerware help create a wonderful formal look. You can’t go wrong with all-white china and a simple white cloth. Also, white makes a great backdrop for mixing and matching printed dinnerware such as checks or stripes. In addition, a neutral beige or ecru colored tablecloth can really help set off festive holiday stemware in yellow, gold or red.
Go Casual
Casual doesn’t have to mean cheap looking. I’m not talking about paper plates and plastic cups. Casual looks can run the gamut from neutral to festive. The difference is in the details. Consider sprucing up your Thanksgiving table with metallic accents on charger plates and in the edging on place mats, or even on something as small as napkin rings. You could also add some whimsy to your table by mixing colorful plastic napkin rings or twig-shaped holders with your good china. Beadwork is also popular. Consider attaching your own beads to table runners, place mats, or napkins; you could also add woven baskets or tablemats for a natural look. You may be surprised at how well it mixes with your existing collection of china, crystal and silverware.
