When I was a kid, I didn’t sleep in on Saturdays. I couldn’t wait to get up so I could spend the morning watching cartoons. It was the one day each week when there was nothing on for hours but shows for kids.
In between shows, there was Schoolhouse Rock. Come on now, I know some of you know the words to those catchy tunes!
Do you remember Scooby Doo and those meddling kids or Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Toons?
Do you remember any of these?
- Flintstones
- Popeye
- Pink Panther
- Top Cat
- Tom and Jerry
- Super Friends
- Atom Ant
- Yogi Bear
- Johnny Quest
- Penelope Pitstop
- Speed Racer
- Magilla Gorilla
Ah, the memories these bring back. Yeah, yeah, I know I’m aging myself, but this morning I was remembering what Saturday morning used to be like. Now that there are endless cable and satellite channels (even the oldies but goodies are available on some stations!), and there are videos, and DVDs, and cartoons can be seen 24/7, Saturday morning just isn’t what it used to be. Some stations still do the Saturday morning thing, but it’s not the same.
My kids don’t get up and excitedly race for the TV. They don’t even care if cartoons are on unless one of their favorites is showing a new episode. Sometimes, I get the urge to sit and watch with them. Dora the Explorer and Kim Possible are two that my youngest kids really like and there are some others that are cute, but I really can’t get into most of the new stuff. Maybe I just miss the old stuff or maybe it’s because some of the newer ones just make me go, “Huh?”
What about Bo Bo Bobobo Bo, or whatever the heck it’s called, or Shorty McShort-Shorts? I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather watch Tom and Jerry or see the Roadrunner dupe Wile E. Coyote any day.
Do you have a favorite cartoon?
