Building a Cat Run

Some cats are perfectly happy with an indoor existence. Others want a chance to explore the great outdoors! It can be risky to let your cat roam on her own; a cat run can keep her safe while she enjoys some fresh air and sunshine.

Why is it bad to let your cat roam freely? There are too many things and animals out there that could be dangerous or harmful to your cat:

  • Dogs and wild animals
  • Cars — a busy highway or a curious cat crawling up into the engine to get warm
  • Someone could take your cat, thinking she’s a stray
  • Poisons like antifreeze on a driveway
  • Your cat could wander too far and get lost

Providing a cat run gives your kitty a safe place to play and explore; you get the sense of security knowing your cat is safe outside.

A cat fence can enclose a portion of your porch, yard, or garden so your cat can enjoy the great outdoors. The drawback of a fence is that if your cat is a climber, she can escape! A cat run complete with ceiling is a more secure option.

Your budget and ability are the only limits to your cat run! You can build a quick, easy, and inexpensive run from wood and chicken wire, or construct a screened-in area big enough for you to join your cat for some outside time.

Cat run tips:

  • Make sure the enclosure is sturdy and secure — check for all possible escape routes.
  • Don’t use materials that are toxic or harmful to cats. Don’t leave any sharp edges that could harm your cat!
  • Make sure the enclosure has a roof to provide shade for sunny days and shelter from bad weather.
  • If your cat is a digger, your run will need a secure floor.
  • Perches and scratching posts can add extra enjoyment for your kitty.
  • Supervise your cat while she is in the cat run!
  • Make sure your cat is up to date on all vaccinations before letting her interact with other animals or explore the great outdoors.
  • Your cat needs access to fresh water at all times — including outside time!
