Tithing Settlement

It is time for tithing settlement once again. This is a great opportunity that each member has to sit down with the bishop each year and discuss the blessings of paying tithing. At tithing settlement you will declare whether or not you have paid a full or partial tithing. During tithing settlement the bishop will discuss how your family is doing. He often will extend some sort of spiritual challenge to your family, such as reading the scriptures daily. Although the days are long for the bishop, the meetings are a time when he gets to meet with ward members in a positive meeting.

If you are a new member and have never attended tithing settlement, it is important that you go each year. It is also important to take your children along. This is a great time for them to learn about the blessings of tithing as well. At tithing settlement you have the chance to review how much tithing and other donations you have paid, and compare it to your personal records. At the end of the year you will receive a statement, which you can use when you file your taxes. Tithing is considered a charitable contribution.

Since the bishop does have so many families to meet with each day, it is important that you arrive on time. If the bishop is running behind it is important to be patient as well. You may want to bring a quiet activity for your children to do while you are waiting. I believe that you should attend tithing settlement in Sunday dress. This is one way of demonstrating the importance of paying your tithing.

Tithing is a commandment, but it is also a blessing. I know that my life has been blessed as I have faithfully paid my tithing over the years. I have had peace in my heart, because I know the Lord is watching over me financially. If you have questions or concerns about tithing, please use this time to discuss them with your bishop. He can answer the questions that you have.
