The Homeschoolers’ Advent Calendar: The North Pole

While your kids are writing those wish lists out for Santa, take some time to visit the North Pole. . .via the web that is. Go ahead–make your hot chocolate, sit back, relax, and spend some time learning about the very interesting Arctic circle. I have to tell you that as I was writing this article, I was so fascinated by the things I found that it took me twice as long to write it. I kept stopping and reading and stopping some more. I hope you find it as fascinating as I did.

Our first stop in our Arctic tour actually in space to view an image 100000 KM above the North Pole.

Next, we’ll take a trip to Kemi, Finland to visit this fantastic snow castle. There’s a small link on the top left to click to get the site translated into English. Unless of course you want to add Finnish to the list of things you study this Christmas season!

For maps, weather reports and other interesting geography facts about the Arctic circle check out this website. What I especially like is how you can trace Explorer’s routes.

Next have your children think about what the culture of Northern peoples might be like. How would the climate affect the culture? Then take a gander at the Arctic Studies Center and learn more.

Your study of Northern peoples will prepare you for a trip to Greenland. While there, you can stay at the Hotel Arctic in one of their five igloo rooms. But I guess if you can’t afford the airfare, you can always build an igloo.

You may be surprised to discover on your journey, that the Arctic is actually teeming with flora and fauna. To learn more about the Arctic ecosystem, check out this page that has a fairly comprehensive list of animals and plant life that you might find in the Arctic circle.

Enjoy your trip!
