Fashion Disaster: Lady in Red Times Four… Oh My!!

It’s every female’s worst nightmare—showing up to a formal event wearing the same dress as another guest. If you think that’s bad consider this TRUE story about that very predicament happening to three women and the party’s famous hostess at a much-publicized event.

The Kennedy Center Honors is regarded as one of Washington’s biggest nights for stars, and glamorous fashion. Last Sunday hundreds of socialites turned out in their designer gowns at the exclusive White House reception that goes with the ceremony. But, the buzz around the room wasn’t about the night’s big honorees; rather chatter centered around a single $8,500 red Oscar de la Renta dress and the four women wearing it—including the party’s hostess First Lady Laura Bush. (UGH! What a faux pas!)

It’s bad enough showing up to an affair wearing the exact same gown as another guest, but it is quite a different story looking across the room and seeing not one, not two, but three other women wearing your dress—including the party’s hostess! One observer said that the women should have congratulated one another on their good taste and the fact that they could afford the dress. Not a bad idea, after all, it’s not like there was anything they could have done to change the situation, right? Well, not exactly… apparently, after the first lady caught wind of the fashion faux pas she made an executive decision to go upstairs and change.

Etiquette experts say it was the right thing for her to do to help take the heat off the other three women. Later, when asked about the situation the first lady told reporters that she and the president found it quite amusing. White House historians also weighed in on the red dress incident noting that it was the first time in history that such a fashion misstep has occurred in the White House. They went on to say that when Jacqueline Kennedy was first lady she made sure, and her couturiers made sure, that nobody else wore that dress that season.

Oddly (or maybe not), there’s been no comment made by the other three ladies that donned the now infamous red dress, though I’m sure it’s safe to assume that none of them will be modeling the designer dress anytime soon. I’m sure it’s an incident that they would love to put behind them. On the other hand, it’s an incident the White House isn’t likely to forget anytime soon—-oh no, no, that red dress is now immortalized in this year’s official presidential holiday photo that goes out all over the world. In it Mrs. Bush is wearing — that same red dress.
