How To Dress Like A Rapper and How One Rapper Is Trying To Dress LESS Like One

You’ve seen them at the mall, on the streets, in parks, and in restaurants… I’m talking about those kids who model the rapper-inspired baggy jeans with waistbands that hit around mid-knee, flashy chain-link necklaces that hit around mid-navel, and baseball caps tilted in angles that defy gravity. One fashion maven described the look as the “scourge of the Earth.” I just consider it a trend and pray my own children will have the good sense not to dare don such an outfit in front of me.

I’m not fond of the look, but I happened to be at Sam’s Club the other day and noticed a display featuring a clothing line by a famous rapper, LL Cool J. Believe it or not, the items were not all that outrageous. Flashy, yes–including one white shirt studded with rhinestones—but not all together gaudy. Apparently, the rapper-turned-actor is now adding the title of fashion designer to his resume. LL has launched a clothing line named after his real name — Todd Smith, which is being carried at Sam’s Club locations around the country. Most of the items I saw (t-shirt, pants, and jackets) were priced under $100—-the t-shirts were about $15 to $20. The signs near the display touted the items as “products for everyday men and women–a good product at an affordable price.” I wonder how many rappers-in-training will find some of LL’s duds under the tree this Christmas?

Speaking of duds… let’s move on to another rapper-wannabe, Kevin “I got Fed-Exed by Britney” Federline. Once the fashion ambassador for cropped pants, wife-beater tank tops, sideways baseball caps, the never-laced sneakers, and all of those hideous chains—-K-Fed may be changing his ways… or at least his wardrobe. It seems that the soon-to-be ex Mr. Spears has gotten an image overhaul. He has traded in his cornrows for skin (he shaved his head) and is covering up his tattoos with a series of printed blazers.

To make sure the media didn’t miss this fashion miracle (I mean makeover) of sorts Federline’s publicist reportedly sent out a press release to various media outlets trumpeting Federline’s transition from “street to chic,” including his new “fabulous well-stated sport jacket with an open collar shirt” and the retirement of the “signature gold chains that he wore around his neck.” So what do you suppose prompted this radical change? Can you say pending custody battle?
