The Creation

When I was growing up, there was a big hype over creationism vs. evolution, or sometimes creationism vs. Darwinism. How blessed I feel to have been raised with ready access to the book of Genesis, which tells us, right upfront:

“In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1.

In a world where more and more people are leaning away from religion and seeking to solve their problems either by their own merit or by relying on science, it brings me comfort to have the knowledge that the world was created by God.

Compare the two side by side.

The Christian teachings are that we have a loving Heavenly Father who created the world for us, exactly suited to our needs, and that He sent us down to earth as images of Him, with brains and eyes and limbs and everything we would need to function. He gave us fruits and vegetables and grains, provided ore in the earth, all the raw materials that we would need to survive. We are watched over, we are loved, and we are guided. It is all a part of a plan to bring us the ultimate happiness and joy.

On the other side of the argument, the earth was created by a big explosion that happened one day and somehow, accidentally, we appeared. There just happened to be in existence what we need to survive, and when we die, we evaporate into that nothingness from which we came.

I don’t know about you, but I would sure rather believe that we are here for a reason and that the earth was designed for us, perfect for our needs, rather than to think that we are the result of an explosion and that this is all there is.

The argument may always be in existence. It may not be proven and finally brought to an end until the very end. But I know what I believe about it, and it brings me peace.
