The kitchen is one room in your home that always needs attention. With the daily preparation of food and cooking, the floors and counters take as much of a beating as the pots and pans. Just think how they must feel when you ignore them! Here are some tips on how to placate them and their soiled feelings before it’s too late.
Know Your Cleanser
Not all cleansers are good for all kitchen counters. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations before using any cleanser on your kitchen counters. Surfaces can react differently to certain cleaning solutions given the wide diversity of materials used in counter construction today. A good way to avoid this is to make your own cleanser. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and white vinegar and add a teaspoon of salt. Lemon juice can be substituted for the vinegar. A paste made from baking soda and water works well too. Rub, leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse off.
Counter Marks and Crumbs
Stick those furniture floor-scuff pads under your kitchen appliances. (Divide their time equally so that the feelings of both your appliances and furniture pieces are assuaged and don’t feel you are sticking it to them rather than under them.) This will help prevent scuffmarks and scratches on your counter surface. If you are all out of scuff pads or if your furniture refuses to relinquish them, try some corn plasters. It is well known that they are less sensitive and also work effectively in this regard.
Bacteria Prevention
Wipe up leftover blood and meat juice from your counter using a paper towel and discard it immediately. Then wipe down the counter with distilled white vinegar. If you have really been bad, wipe off those fingerprints too. I’ll tell you how some other time.
