When I watched the unveiling of the new Elmo TMX, I have to admit that I laughed and laughed. I was amazed at how technology took a Muppet from Sesame Street and turned it into a friendly monster that rolls around, kicks, and giggles. Always dressed bright red with a red nose and big eyes, the children are naturally drawn to Elmo. However, as I watched the sales of Elmo TMX skyrocket, making it near impossible to find one to buy, I started to ask myself, “Is this new Elmo only for entertainment or is there an educational factor?”
No matter which category Elmo TMX falls in, I think we would all agree it makes us laugh. While there is not a real educational value, think of this new Elmo as a boost to mood. After all, if you can give your children something that will make them laugh, obviously this is good. No, Elmo TMX does not count, say the alphabet, or require pieces to be put together but he does lighten the mood.
Remember, while some toys are regarded as educational, Elmo TMX is more entertainment. What children will learn is that by tickling Elmo in a number of specific spots, he will go into a routine of slapping his tummy, rolling on his side, kicking his feet, and laughing hysterically. After done, Elmo says, “Again – Again”. I suppose the educational value here is teaching children the joy of laughter.
Another benefit to Elmo TMX is that the technology could open a few questions from the children. While that might be a little bit of a stretch pertaining to education, it would give you an opportunity to talk to children about technology, computer chips, and so on. I would say that while Elmo TMX is not really sold as an educational toy, it is a great investment. Even with a price tag around $100, I think it would provide both children and adults with a nice icebreaker for parties and perhaps a child’s new best friend.
