Old Wives’ Tales and Natural Remedies

We are an adventuresome family—we’re pretty much willing to try all sorts of ideas, suggestions, old wives’ tales and natural remedies we hear about—if they don’t sound dangerous or too kooky. It’s pretty common around our house to have someone sharing the latest, “Guess what I read?” or “Do you know what so-and-so told me?” Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t. But we seem to find it rather intriguing to try out various ideas and “remedies”…

We have some classic favorites, though, that I thought I’d share with y’all:

Hot showers and lavender soap as a cure for insomnia. These are actually two natural remedies that we put together and found to be an almost fool-proof way to get to sleep on stressful, anxious nights or nights when sleep just isn’t coming. The combination of a cozy, hot shower and the relaxing scent of lavender just seem to do the trick.

Hot tea with lemon and honey when you feel the slightest twinges of a cold coming on. This is another classic and many of you probably have your own version of this one up your sleeves. We like lemon or mint tea, nice and hot with a wedge of lemon and a spoon of honey. I have to tell you, I think there are magical powers in this simple concoction!

Amazing headache cure—I’m not sure where I read this one, but I did read about it somewhere. Instead of reaching for the pain reliever when you have a headache, sit down and try to drink 6-8 glasses of water as quickly as possible. Drink more water than you think you can and there’s a pretty good chance it will cure your headache. My son, who has a tendency to get migraines (like his mom) swears by this as an “anywhere” headache cure.

Now, I’m definitely not a doctor, and I’m not making any promises about the healing affects of our favorite “remedies”, but I don’t think any of these suggestions are too shocking or surprising. I’m also guessing that you might have some of your own. It’d be fun to hear what some of your favorite cures and remedies are so we can add them to our collection!
