Adding Style to Your Teen’s Room

One of the most important items in a bedroom is obviously the bed. It is generally the largest piece of furniture, which makes it the focal point of the room. Making the bed look cool is a great way to transform your teen’s entire room into a stylish space.

The bedding you choose is important, but so is the way you arrange the bed itself as well as the bedding. Instead of the typical comforter, bed skirt, and shams try something a bit more casual.

Even if your teen doesn’t have a daybed, you can create that relaxed daybed/sofa feel. Start by removing the headboard and footboard, if necessary. Next, center the bed against the wall, making sure the entire length of the bed rests against the wall.

Make the bed with cool new fabrics and bedding, placing the comforter, blanket, or bedspread evenly, so it covers both ends of the bed. Your teen can fold the end down when he or she wants to get under the covers. You may need to purchase a larger size cover than is normally required. For example, you may need a full size bed cover for a twin bed in order to cover both ends evenly, down to the skirt.

Next, cover a king size pillow or a body pillow with great fabric and place it against the wall. Follow this with two bed pillows, also covered in interesting fabric. This is a good place to use a contrasting print or color. Toss in a neck roll or a round pillow and a couple of accent pillows. These can be mixed or matched.

Use nightstands as end tables and provide a reading lamp. Hang some artwork over the bed. Decorating this way will give the bed a casual, sofa style feel, which is inviting for your teen and his or her friends. It offers a place for kids to sit and watch TV, and it creates a more relaxed feeling than sitting on a typical bed. It also makes your teen’s room appear more grown up and more stylish.
