More Carpet Stains: Their Final Demise

ladycarpetcleanerThe standard carpet withstands a myriad of intrusions and punishments during its shaggy or smooth lifetime and even the best of them occasionally meet a stain that simply won’t go away. Here are some final thoughts on some really difficult ones. Read on, if you are up to the challenge!

Rust Marks
Make a paste using water and baking soda. Apply it to the rust marks and let it sit for three or four hours. Apply shampoo and rinse.

Soot
Scoop up excess soot, then sprinkle talcum powder liberally over the area. Leave on for a few minutes and vacuum well. If that doesn’t work, try a homemade concoction created by mixing ½ cup powdered or liquid detergent, 1-teaspoon ammonia, 1-teaspoon vinegar and a quart of warm water. Use a hand-mixer to create a good froth and using the froth only, rub lightly with a sponge or cloth over the area. Let the carpet dry and then vacuum.

Tar
Dab a little kerosene on a sponge and dab the affected area gently. Rinse off with warm water with a little dish soap in it. (Do not confuse the sponge with anything flammable.)

Tomato-Based Stains
Foamy shaving cream will usually remove ketchup, spaghetti sauce etc. Rub it in with a sponge, rinse off and then vacuum when dry.

Vomit and Other Pleasantries
Scrape up the excess and try not to look too closely. (Otherwise you may add another heap to the pile.) Apply a solution of ¼ cup baking soda and 1 cup warm water. To remove the odor, make a mixture of I cup hydrogen peroxide, 1- teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. Apply with a sponge; let it dry and then vacuum.

This collection of carpet cleaning tips will help keep your carpet clean, smiling and smelling like a rose. If you have any others to add to the list, please share as the kingdom of stains never dies and grows a little bit with each passing slip of the wrist and spill.
