The importance that the church places on families is huge. With the emphasis that the church places on families it is important to realize that marriage is the foundation of your family. Often it is easy to become too wrapped up in the children, and let your marriage just drift apart. This can end up in divorce, which can destroy families. This is one of the main reasons why the church also emphasizes the importance of date night every week.
There are many reasons why you may not have a weekly date night with your spouse. It may be that you do not have the money to afford a sitter. You may have a hard time leaving your children with a sitter or finding someone you trust. It may be that one of is stressed out with work and school, and a date night is just another added stress. Here are some ideas that may help you with the problem.
1) You could form a babysitting co-op and swap sitting with other couples in your ward. This allows you to have your date night, without paying for a sitter. Also since adults will be watching your children you may be more comfortable with leaving them.
2) If you don’t actually go out, you can still have a date night. Put your kids to bed early, and then spend time together as a couple. You can watch a movie together, play a game or just spend time talking to each other. You may plan a special dessert or something else to make the night special.
3) It is important to realize that if you do not take time for each other that you are not providing the stable home environment that your children really need. The best thing for your children is to have them feel secure in your relationship. This will give them confidence and happiness.
4) Take the time to go to the temple together as often as you can. If possible once a month is a good period of time. If you live farther away from the temple this may be more difficult to do.
5) If a date night is proving too difficult, find other ways to nurture your relationship. Try to do nice surprises for your spouse through out the week. Leave a note for her on her pillow. Pack an extra nice lunch for him, with a note or something else that he would appreciate. This will help your relationship as well.
