Curtains do so much to enhance the décor of any home, but they too gather dust and dirt that must be addressed after a while. How can you clean them when you can ignore the dirt no longer? Well, some curtains you really can’t in terms of washing, but others will respond to a light touch. Read on for some tips or…it’s curtains to you!
Window Sheers and Net Curtains
These types of curtains can be easily cleaned by filling your bathtub with warm water and throw in a couple of denture tablets. (Resist the urge to jump in and bathe as your time will eventually come.)
Curtains and Drapes
Most curtains can be laundered on a light cycle. Always check first for color fastness in some inconspicuous spot. (Perhaps the back of a relative’s shirt sleeve when he or she isn’t looking.) To add fullness to your drapes, add ¾ cup Epsom salts to the final rinse cycle.
Shrink-Free Curtains
To avoid shrinkage, when washing lined drapes be careful to select the water temperature that best suits the fabric most likely to shrink, either the drapes or the lining. If you can’t decide, don’t wash them. Give them away, buy another set and start all over again.)
Wrinkle-Free Curtains
Hang curtains up while they are damp to avoid ironing them. Most wrinkles will fall out very quickly. (Too bad facial wrinkles aren’t removed as easily.)
Curtain Hang-Up
If curtains don’t hang evenly after you have washed them, take a broom handle or curtain rod and run it through the hem at the bottom of the curtain. The weight will straighten it out.
Easy Drape “Dry Cleaning”
Place your drapes in the dryer with a damp towel and select a delicate cycle for 15 to 20 minutes. This process will remove dust and freshen up the drape’s appearance.
