The Scale Keeps Me Honest

The scale keeps me honest. I’ll admit that I’m intimidated by it. It’s not so bad catching a glimpse of my reflection in a mirror or window. I can handle that because that woman isn’t really me, or so I’ve managed to convince myself. Yet, when I force myself to stand on a scale, I can’t explain away the numbers. Believe me, I’ve tried.

Keeping track of my weight helps me to have fewer indulgent moments. Those times when I’ve done more munching than I should have, I work that much harder to resist future urges. I guess that’s why I don’t like to cook. Okay, honestly, I’ve never liked to cook. I prefer baking desserts. That’s how I reached my all time high of 315 pounds. I used to tell people that the weight came from having my children. That excuse doesn’t fly anymore because my youngest is eight.

When I read diet books, I try to incorporate a little of this and a little of that into my lifestyle. I’m still trying to find the right balance. One thing I’ve discovered is that I’m a taste-tester. I sample everything I make. Sometimes, I can’t eat a full meal because I’ve had too many samples. I, also, learned that I can’t store desserts in the house. Ice cream, cake, and pie don’t stand a chance of surviving the day. This sounds bad, but my children get excited when we’re having dessert. It’s not that they’re deprived of sweets, but I limit the number of times a month that we have them. This makes it special for everyone. Another part of my strategy is to cook and get out of the kitchen as fast as possible because I’m afraid of eating too much of the wrong things. As reinforcement, I keep the scale near the kitchen. Some experts say that weekly weigh-ins are sufficient, others say that daily weigh-ins are better. I don’t know which is right. I have a tendency to weigh myself about once a week. It’s a constant reminder that I have to be accountable to myself.
