I have to admit this is a blog researched and written out of sheer curiosity. I have never had a truly “colicky” baby. I have had one baby who was what I would consider high need, but once our nursing issues resolved, things did get better. Furthermore, by my definition colic is crying for several hours at a stretch. My baby was just fussy if I wasn’t holding her. It was exhausting, but it was not colic.
I was in a baby store recently scouring the clearance racks. (Is there another way to dress twins?) I was amazed as I walked around at how much “stuff” there was to supposedly soothe colic. So I did a little search and was further amazed. There were pages and pages of products that you can buy to soothe your baby’s colic. Curious as to what they are? Here are the more interesting and/or expensive examples.
Pure White Noise
If you can’t stand the sound of baby’s crying you can just pop in one of their CD’s to create a “calm, and relaxing” environment guaranteed to “drown out annoying noises”. I have to admit that I’m chuckling as I type this. I can’t imagine solving colic by drowning out the noise. In addition to “white noise” CD’s for adults, they also offer some soothing ‘white noise’ CD’s for babies that include titles like: Baby Washing Machine, Baby Car Ride, Baby Blow Dryer, or Baby Vacuum Cleaner. You can order these at purewhitenoise.com I am wondering if subliminal messaging is also included to pre-program baby to want to do the chores when he’s older?
A Baby Wedge
Here’s a product that makes a little more sense. Some doctors believe that colic is really due to undiagnosed acid reflux disease. It is not a secret that one of the things that will relieve this is positioning baby more upright. This wedge (with accompanying baby holder) will prop your baby up at a comfortable 30 degree angle. It’s only $119.00!! That’s a steal considering that you likely have a car seat that will also prop your baby up at a comfortable 30 degree angle!
Fussy Mussy Spritzer
For $8.00 you can buy two ounces of Fussy Mussy Spritzer. It’s so gentle, they proclaim, you can spray it right on your baby’s face. . .as long as you avoid the eyes. It smells like roses and supposedly roses will make your little angel fall asleep. However, I’m scratching my head wondering how one of my screaming children would’ve reacted to having “spritzer” sprayed in their face. I am failing to envision the calming effect that this must have.
Gripe Water
Apparently when the baby has a gripe, you can give him this water and he’ll calm down. I did not include a link because you can buy it just about anywhere. The formulas are herbal which means they are not approved by the FDA. However, gripe water manufacturers say that their formulas are safe for infants if used as directed.
Will any of these remedies work? I don’t know. The only sure thing that cures a fussy baby is time. If you try one of these or something equally as interesting let me know so that I can add it to my blog!
