Are You Hosting A Super Bowl Party?

I was standing in the express lane at Wal-Mart this afternoon hoping to pay for my laundry detergent and package of paper towels quickly. I figured I had a good chance since the guy in front of me only had one item in his cart. Man, was I wrong, wrong, wrong. His one item happened to be a 32-inch flat screen TV and before he had time to reach for his wallet, five (and I do mean five) Wal-Mart employees swarmed him like ants on jelly.

I still don’t know what all the fuss was about (it’s not like he was trying to fit the TV in his back pocket and walk out of the store without paying), but amid the hubbub the man turned to me and sheepishly said, “I’m just getting it for my Super Bowl party.” Boy, I thought, that’s going to be some party.

What about you? Are you planning to watch the Chicago Bears take on the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday? I just saw news coverage of the Bears arriving in Miami. I’m sure my fellow blogger Sherry already has her Super Bowl Sunday menu planned. As for our family, we typically (and happily) R.S.V.P to a friend or relative’s party instead of hosting our own.

I don’t know what part of the country you live in, but football is a HUGE deal here. Even though the Green Bay Packers didn’t score an invite to this year’s big game, you can bet that 95% of Wisconsin residents will be hosting parties (big and small), anxiously watching to see if the Colts beat “da Bears.” (It serves as a momentary distraction in the Brett Favre retirement waiting game.)

I grew up in Hawaii (a state void of a professional football team) so the excitement surrounding the Super Bowl was not as intense, which is not to say that residents there don’t host Super Bowl parties, they just do so in their garages instead of inside their homes. Most people set up a television set in a shady part of the garage and hibachi (grill) up Korean short ribs, hot dogs, and hamburgers.

If you are days away from transforming your home into Super Bowl party central—good luck. If you are still in the planning stages, click here for some party planning tips. To read some quick and easy post-party clean up tips click here.

As for me, I’m usually too busy making sure my toddler keeps her fingers out of the spinach dip to concentrate on the game… but I do make time to watch the commercials.
