Three Kitchen Gadgets I Can’t Cook Without – Part 1

Listed here are my top three kitchen gadgets I can’t cook without (well actually I can cook without them but I just don’t want to!). What are they? My top three kitchen gadgets are my salad spinner, my small plastic cutting board, and my small food processor.

Food Gadget #1: Salad Spinner
The OXO Salad Spinner that I use in my kitchen is such a big helper to me. I’ve only had this gadget for 2 years now, but I never want to be without it again. This salad spinner comes with a plastic salad bowl and top (to keep salads fresh longer in the fridge), a draining basket that inserts into the plastic bowl, and a spinning top with pump. After I chop some lettuce for a salad, I put it all into the draining basket (like a colander) to rinse it. After the lettuce gets rinsed, I put the filled draining basket inside the plastic bowl and put the spinning top with pump over it and pump until my salad is dry. This gadget saves me so much mess and time (waiting for lettuce to dry!) in the kitchen.

Food Gadget #2: Small Plastic Cutting Board/Mat
How many cutting boards do you have in your kitchen? Do you use them all? I have 4 cutting boards in my kitchen, but I tend to use one particular one every day. My small plastic cutting board/mat is the one I whip out from the cabinet to slice a banana or apple for my daughter or quickly slice an onion to saute up in the skillet. I love owning my expensive large bamboo cutting board for large amounts of cutting and slicing, and having my decorative glass cutting board, but really they don’t get taken out of the cabinet more than once every other month. My small plastic cutting board, however, is so easy to handle and rinse off that I am certainly glad to have it in my kitchen!

Food Gadget #3: Small Food Processor (electric food chopper)
The small food processor that I’ve got is certainly not an expensive once since I found it at Goodwill for under $5, but it sure does a fine job chopping up the veggies I use for dinner every other night or so. Food processors can get expensive, though, especially the larger they are, but I’m glad I have a small one that is easy to pull out of the cupboard and onto the counter, rinse it out when done, and use it again the next day. I use my plastic cutting board to slice up onions, bell peppers, carrots, or whatever else, then dump them into the small food processor for a very fast chop. It’s so painless for me, and I certainly hope it continues to work for a very long time!
