I write about fitness and health. I write about working out and losing weight. I write about motivators and tools and much, much more. I write about it because it’s interesting to me and hopefully helpful to you. I am constantly scanning the news reports for the latest trends, the latest discoveries and even the latest research studies available to help people achieve their fitness goals.
So this morning, as I was scanning my news alerts and news stories – I found my jaw falling open at the latest round of scientific research that was announced by the GW Pharmaceuticals in Great Britain was beginning human trials in their experimental treatment for obesity that they derived from cannabis.
Why Does This Freak Me Out?
Honestly, I have no idea why it freaks me out. But I read the article and my jaw fell open. They have already developed a treatment from multiple sclerosis from cannabis. The cannabis plant contains over 70 different cannabinoids and each one has a distinct and different effect on the body. The one they are working on will work on switching off the areas of the brain that make them hungry when they smoke the drug.
There are three stages the experimental drug had to go through before it would be eligible for human testing and there are many other drug companies apparently testing similarly developed products in clinical trials.
Of course, not being a pharmaceutical expert or major, I must assume that they are making sure that their derivatives and products are not addictive. (Though my understanding is that marijuana and cannabis are among some of the least addictive forms of controlled substances – nicotine is by far more addictive, but that’s neither here nor there.)
Ultimately, what I want to know and that the article doesn’t elaborate on is whether the drug will be like all the other appetite suppressants out there – assuming that if you can suppress the hunger in someone, it will help them lose weight – and using cannabis to do it – though I had to laugh when the article concluded its summary with the fact that the pharmaceutical’s marijuana plants were grown in a secret location.
Well, duh!
