Closet Shelving: It’s Time!

closetshelvesCan you find what you are looking for whenever you open the door to your dreaded closets? If your house is anything like mine, even the skeletons in there are cluttered, and it’s time to wake up, smell the coffee and be counted (or something like that). Read on for some tips, if you dare.

Designing Your Closet Shelving
This step should be done before you go out and buy supplies and will save you time and money if you do so. Like all journeys, closet shelving begins with a single step and in this case, it involves making a list of the kind of things you want to keep in your closet. (Now is the time for that nutty aunt of yours to return to the asylum where she is missed.) Some important questions might include: Do you have a lot of shoes? Do you need shelf space for folded clothes like sweaters or do your clothes prefer to hang? Perhaps clothes won’t be in there at all and the closet will instead be a place to store records and files. You need to plan accordingly.

Measure for Measure
Measure the space you have as that will shatter, create or confirm any plans you might have for the closet space. Determine the size of each wall and get a blank piece of paper for each one. Make some rough sketches about your desired layout and use them in conjunction with your measurements to figure out how close to each other the shelves should be and how many you can potentially fit on each wall.

Installing Closet Shelves

Closet shelving provides one of the simplest solutions for cleaning up clutter and designs have come a long way over the years, rendering individual touches and tastes to suit everyone. A kiss may always be just a kiss, but shelving today is much more than just a shelf and pole arrangement. The ideal system will allow you to store your things neatly, yet make them easy to access. There are two kinds of shelving to consider depending on your situation: built-in, custom-designed if you own your own home and removable shelving if you are a renter.

There are other important choices to make about your closet shelving. Stay tuned for more tips tomorrow.
